I’m a full time student, when should I do my internship?

It is recommended that full time students complete their internship during the summer between their first and second year.

How many work hours do I need to complete for my internship requirement?

360 hours, approximately three months or 12 weeks full time (or any part-time combination that adds up to 360).

Do I need to register for my internship?

In order to receive a grade for your internship experience you need to register for PA8280 the semester you intend on completing your internship, probably the summer between your first and second year. However, you will have meetings and assignments before the summer semester. It is necessary that you meet with Dr. Sampson before enrolling in this class, and understand the assignments and requirements of the internship.

What should be my first step in preparing for my internship search?

Talk to second year students. They have a wealth of experience, both good and bad, which can help you identify and land a good internship.

When should I begin looking for my internship?

That depends on several factors, including where you hope to find your internship. Generally, the more remote the location (another state, Washington, overseas), the earlier you should begin. October is not too early. Others should narrow their search by the winter break and begin applying in January.

When do most students accept an internship?

Most students accept their internship between late February and early April. A few will be earlier and a small number will be later. You want to be earlier rather than later!

What is considered a “good” internship?

Obviously, a recognized organization can be beneficial as a resume builder. But a good internship is one that provides an opportunity for broadening your experience and permitting personal growth. You should be alert to the extent to which your internship opportunity has the potential for providing a good experience and allowing personal growth.

Are there specific places that have taken interns regularly?

Yes. A few are: Regional planning commissions, Environmental Protection Agency (this is competitive, see your instructor for details), City of Columbia, City of Ellisville, City of Boonville, Columbia-based social service organizations, Missouri Coalition of Children’s Agencies.

Will the School provide any support for my internship?

The school has provided a stipend for students who incur extraordinary expenses, such as a Washington or overseas placement. The stipend is modest, is dependent upon funding, and is awarded competitively.

Are internships paid, and if so, what is the typical rate?

Some internships are paid but most of the not-for-profits are not paid. Pay will vary but can range from $9 to $14 per hour.

Should I only look at publicized internships?

No. Contact any entity that you find interesting. You will want to design your internship duties with your internship supervisor to ensure that the experience meets your needs and those of the supervisor.

What are the typical mistakes that previous students have made when looking for an internship?

Students consistently make two mistakes. First, they wait too long to get serious about the search. Second, they apply for an internship that they really want and then suspend their search until they have been rejected by that organization. Try to avoid these mistakes!
