Currently a tenured Full Professor, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dr. Stein is Special Assistant to the Chair in his department. He has coordinated behavioral sciences teaching at community-based programs and has taught behavioral sciences to Family Medicine resident physicians, physician's assistant (P.A.) students, P.A. affiliated students, and graduate students in occupational health. He consults on a monthly basis with the Southwest Oklahoma Family Practice Residency Program in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Since 1985 he has also served as coordinator of Balint groups in the Oklahoma City Family Medicine program. Dr. Stein received his B.A. in historical musicology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967, and his Ph.D. in anthropology from the same institution in 1972. During his graduate training at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, and the Department of Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh, he received two Maurice Falk Medical Fund Predoctoral Fellowships (1967-1972). He taught for six years in the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. During his last two years at Meharry, he co-coordinated the residency training program in the Department of Psychiatry (with A.K.M. Fakhruddin, M.D.). Dr. Stein has authored more than two hundred scholarly, clinical and research papers and chapters, over thirty book reviews, and has twenty-five published books. In late 2006 he was nominated for Oklahoma Poet Laureate.
