In the Spotlight

Matt Rysavy
Second Year MPA Student

Since his Peace Corps service in Niger, 2nd year MPA student Matt Rysavy has had a special interest in Africa. A summer internship gave him the opportunity to work in South Africa with Fair Share, an NGO that is housed in the School of Government at the University of the Western Cape. Fair Share trains local elected officials on better governance and their responsibility under South Africa’s constitution. Matt worked on training materials for the Local Economic Development program.

"Working at Fair Share was an incredible experience. It was unique in that it had a strong academic/research base but the program itself was very applied. The staff varied from those with Ph.D.s to those who were part of the ANC resistance during apartheid. This atmosphere allowed me apply many of the skills that I learned during my first year at the Truman School. It also gave me a greater appreciation for our government system and renewed my interest in public service."
