Fulbright Reflects on Truman Experience

For anyone considering studying abroad, the experience is often accompanied by a mix of excitement and apprehension. As someone traveling outside my home country of Mauritania for the first time, I shared this sentiment. However, my concerns quickly dissipated upon arriving in Columbia, where I found a welcoming and supportive environment at the Truman School of Government and Public Affairs. From the outset, the community of staff and students made me feel at home, offering assistance in settling down and guiding me to the numerous campus resources available. This support played a crucial role in my successful adaptation and academic journey.

The Truman School provides an exceptional academic experience, marked by approachable, highly qualified instructors who are committed to student success. I had the privilege of taking courses such as regional economic development, public policy process and strategy, and data science. These courses were instrumental in deepening my understanding of economic development and politics. The skills and knowledge I gained have prepared me to take on new challenges and propel my career to greater heights.

Beyond the classroom, the Truman School excels in fostering personal growth and cultural immersion. Extracurricular activities enriched my experience and broadened my horizons. One standout memory was a trip to Fulton, Missouri, to explore the Winston Churchill Museum. Additionally, the school hosted events featuring guest speakers who brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share with students. These opportunities were both inspiring and educational, enhancing my overall learning experience.

Cultural exchange was another vital aspect of my time in Columbia. One memorable experience was being invited to a Thanksgiving celebration, thanks to the kindness of a local alum and board member. Events like this allowed me to immerse myself in American traditions and build lasting connections. I am also incredibly grateful for the friendships I formed with my peers in the MPA program, who embraced me as part of their community.

Looking ahead, I am eager to apply what I have learned to contribute to the development of Mauritania. My plans include working with international organizations to address pressing challenges and establishing a nonprofit organization to provide educational opportunities for children and girls who face financial barriers. In the long term, I aspire to run for a position in Mauritania’s National Assembly, where I hope to influence policy and drive meaningful change.

The Truman School has not only enhanced my education but also shaped my vision for the future. I am deeply grateful for the transformative experiences and the incredible people I met along the way. They have become an enduring part of my life, and I will carry the lessons and memories from this journey with me always.
