Welcome to the Service-to-Service Initiative

The Service-to-Service Initiative is a collaborative effort between the Truman School of Government and Public Affairs, We the Veterans, and the Volcker Alliance to support veterans and service members transitioning into careers in public service.

Service-to-Service is a national initiative that encourages veterans, active duty, and military-connected family members to earn a Master of Public Affairs degree as the academic underpinning for a transition from military service into meaningful careers in local and state government. Service-to-Service scholars will join a cohort of peers within the Truman School and with others from select universities throughout the country. Selectees will receive a $500 scholarship and additional travel funds to participate in professional development events on campus and with the national cohort.

What is more, veterans and military families are a well-networked, easily mobilized, and service-oriented group of Americans. The veteran community also holds incredibly high levels of public trust—approximately 70% of Americans have confidence in veterans to “do what’s right” for America. By connecting veterans and military family members to opportunities to serve again through public service, we can leverage the widespread public trust of the veteran community to shore up confidence in government and democratic institutions.

The Experience

Student Benefit

Students will convene periodically in Columbia, MO [both campus and online students are eligible to apply] and at other participating campuses to enhance their experience through community-building, networking, and professional development programming. Selectees will receive a $500 scholarship and travel funds to participate in events on campus and with the national cohort.

Job Placement

The Truman School and the Volcker Alliance will partner with state and local government agencies to facilitate placement of Service-to-Service graduates in high-need roles. While employment in state and local government is not required of students or guaranteed, participating in the initiative, career services and professional development efforts will emphasize and position students for career opportunities.
