Gov. Greitens signed Executive Order 17-09 on March 13, 2017, giving state employees within departments and agencies of the executive branch up to six weeks of parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child. Primary caregivers who are qualified state employees may receive six weeks of paid family leave and secondary caregivers shall receive three weeks of paid family leave, at 100 percent of regular salary. A family where both parents are state employees may receive up to twelve weeks of paid family leave, which may be taken consecutively or concurrently. Paid family leave under the new order must be taken within the first twelve weeks of the child’s birth or adoption. The executive order also encourages other state officials, commissions, legislatures and the judiciary to adopt comparable policies for their workers.
Research by the Women’s Foundation and the Institute of Public Policy informed the Governor’s decision to expand policies that strengthen families, reduce reliance on public assistance and support economic growth in Missouri.
