IPP Develops Missouri School Climate and Culture Survey

Author: Wayne Mayfield

In collaboration with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) IPP developed the Missouri School Climate and Culture Survey (MSCCS). The MSCCS consists of a series of surveys that are designed to assess the quality and characteristics of the social and educational environments in schools. The MSCCS was developed to measure school climate from multiple perspectives. To assess student perspectives, there are two student surveys, one for younger youth (grades 3-5) and for older youth (grades 6-12). Staff and parent perspectives are also measured via surveys designed for those populations.

The MSCCS is administered in the spring and fall of each year and is offered gratis to any Missouri school district interested in using it.

The MSCCS surveys were piloted in Missouri schools during October-November 2022. Eighty-seven school districts and 345 schools participated in the voluntary pilot. The MSCCS surveys were administered by 40 school districts in the spring of 2023 and 57 districts in the fall of 2023.
