Truman School Students Showcase Capstone Projects with Public Sector Partners
Graduate students from the Truman School of Government and Public Affairs recently presented their capstone projects. In partnership with public agencies and nonprofit organizations, students applied policy analysis and problem-solving to address real-world challenges.
This year’s cohort partnered with a range of stakeholders, including the City of Columbia, Partner for Better, the MU Sustainability Office, the Village of River Bend, Missouri Energy Initiative, and the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance. The projects, which encapsulate the educational experience of the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program, reflect months of research, stakeholder engagement, and data-driven recommendations.
Students working with the City of Columbia’s Economics Department conducted an analysis of public transportation and bussing in Columbia with suggestions for increasing revenue and moving toward a more sustainable model for public transportation in the city.
A team assigned to Partner for Better, a local nonprofit, surveyed regional nonprofits concerning their greatest obstacles for improving services to rural communities.
In collaboration with the MU Sustainability Office, students analyzing food waste suggested methods to decrease food waste through creating partnerships for redistribution efforts across dining services.
Students supporting the Village of River Bend, a community preparing for growth and incorporation, provided a scope and timeline for creating and developing a sewer and water system.
Several students reviewed and compared, on a regional basis, the energy efficiency programs, policies and initiatives of Missouri and surrounding states for the Missouri Energy Initiative.
Finally, the team working with the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance provided policy analysis on baseline health services and coverage for Missourians since the last update came in 2017.
Kathleen Miller, Director of Academic Programs stated, “Collaborations highlight what our MPA program is all about: real-world experience, hands-on research, and opportunities that prepare students to lead with impact.” The capstone presentations underscore the Truman School’s commitment to experiential learning and public service, bridging academic training with the pressing needs of Missouri communities and agencies.
