Ed Goldring received a place on the Institute for Far Eastern Studies’ (IFES) summer program in 2017. IFES is a research arm of Kyungnam University in South Korea, whose scholars focus on research relating to peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula. Ed conducted research for two months over the summer in Seoul, including interviews with North Korean defectors, policy, and media professionals. He recently published an article in the Washington Post’ Monkey Cage on the effects of UN sanctions against North Korea.
In 2018, Ed will return to South Korea on a fellowship from the Korea Foundation. The fellowship provides full funding to do intensive Korean language training at Yonsei University in Seoul from March to September 2018. He plans to further his research while in Seoul by conducting interviews with North Korean defectors.
Tiffanesha Williams was recently awarded an AIFIS (American Institute for Indonesian Studies) fellowship, which supports Americans working in Indonesia, and Indonesians working in the United States. The AIFIS-ECA/CAORC (Council of American Overseas Research Centers) Fellowship is offered to approximately 11 doctoral students annually to conduct research in Indonesia.
Tiffanesha will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia in December and January, where she will spend six weeks researching at the National Archives. She is investigating colonies policies on education of the indigenous population, and the evolution of education in Indonesia, and its implications for governance.
