Student Spotlight-Adam Thorpe

Before I enrolled at the Truman School I worked as the editor of a newspaper in a small town in Missouri. I covered a whole variety of people trying to make their communities better — and developed an interest in the logic behind public policy. How can we design public policy so their initiatives would have the highest possible chance of success? I enrolled at the Truman School in order to get better answers to that question.

IPP Recognizes 2022 Students and Graduates

The Institute of Public Policy has had another productive year and we would like to recognize all of the students who contribute to the success of the Institute.  Graduate Research Assistants provide support through a variety of tasks including data collection, entry and analysis, literature reviews, key informant interviews, survey design and distribution, and contributions to progress and final reports.  This year, the Institute also hosted a work-study student who assisted with administrative tasks.

Political Science PhD Candidates Jung and Dorssom Recognized

Two Department of Political Science doctoral candidates recently received awards recognizing their outstanding work: Yujin Julia Jung received the Robert N. Epsten Scholarship in International Studies; and Elizabeth Dorssom received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Graduate Professional Council. Jung, whose research focuses on comparative politics and international relations, received $10,000 from the Harry S Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation and the MU Graduate School.

Research and RFP Development for Missouri Department of Corrections Second Chance Act Pay for Success Grant

The Missouri Department of Corrections (DOC) was awarded the Second Chance Act Pay for Success Grant by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in March of 2020. This grant provides funds for one or more outcomes-based contracts (OBC) to ensure accountability and improve performance regarding recidivism reduction. OBCs are structured such that payments are tied directly to certain outcome metrics being achieved by a service provider.

School Climate Survey

To assist the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) with their school improvement process, IPP is developing the Missouri School Climate and Culture Survey (MSCCS), which will be used to gather the perceptions of students, parents, and certificated school staff regarding the quality and character of school experiences, including academic, social, and safety domains.

Program Performance Evaluation of the Preschool Development Grant Birth to Five

Since 2020, IPP has worked with Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to evaluate the $33.5 million Preschool Development Grant Birth to Five. Awarded by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, the purpose of the grant is to help the state coordinate a more effective, high-quality early learning system for Missouri’s children and families.

United WE Update on Occupational Licensing and Women Entrepreneurs in Missouri

IPP has produced several reports for the United WE regarding occupational licensing in Missouri.  Since those reports were published, United WE and the state of Missouri have made progress reducing barriers related to state licensing requirements that disproportionately affect women.  IPP will produce a brief to update the findings of the previous research, examine the progress made toward reducing barriers to licensing in Missouri and considerations for opportunities to continue to reduce barriers.
